How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Venue: Tips from a Wiltshire Wedding Photographer
Choosing your wedding venue is one of the biggest — and most exciting — decisions you’ll make when planning your big day. It sets the tone, shapes the atmosphere, and becomes the backdrop for every moment (and every photo!).
As a wedding photographer based in Salisbury, Wiltshire, I’ve been lucky enough to capture weddings at a wide variety of venues — from rustic barns tucked away in the countryside to grand hotels with sweeping views. Over the years, I’ve learned what really matters when choosing the perfect place to say “I do.” Whether you’re just starting your venue search or narrowing down your list, here are some tips to help you find the ideal spot.
1. Start with Your Vision
Before diving into brochures and venue tours, take a moment to imagine your wedding day. Are you picturing a relaxed outdoor celebration with fairy lights and long trestle tables? Or something more classic — perhaps a stately home with elegant gardens and a candlelit reception?
Your venue should reflect your personality as a couple. Think about:
The overall vibe — rustic, romantic, modern, vintage?
Your guest list size — do you want something intimate or grand?
The kind of photos you’re dreaming of — a venue’s setting plays a huge role in the look and feel of your wedding gallery.
2. Consider the Season and the Weather
Wiltshire is home to some stunning venues — rolling countryside, historic buildings, and picturesque gardens — but it’s also the UK, so the weather can be unpredictable (it poured down on my wedding day).
If you’re planning a spring or summer wedding, outdoor spaces can be magical. But ask yourself:
What are the indoor options if it rains?
Will your guests be comfortable in cold or very hot weather?
From a photographer’s perspective, the lighting in a venue is crucial. Natural light makes a big difference, especially for indoor ceremonies or bridal prep photos.
3. Think About Logistics
While it’s easy to fall in love with a venue at first glance, practical details matter too — especially when it comes to your guests’ experience and the smooth running of the day.
Questions to consider:
Is the venue easy to get to from Salisbury, Bath, Warminster or nearby towns with rail and bus connections?
Is there accommodation on-site or nearby for guests?
Are there dedicated spaces for getting ready?
Venues that have a good flow between ceremony, reception, and evening party areas also tend to photograph better and help keep the day stress-free.
4. Visit the Venue at the Right Time
Try to visit your shortlisted venues at the same time of year — and ideally the same time of day — as your planned wedding date. This gives you a much clearer picture of how the light will look, how the gardens will feel, and what your guests might experience.
If possible, ask to see photos from real weddings at the venue. You can also check if the venue is featured in any of the galleries on my website — I’m always happy to share examples and give insights into how the space works from a photography point of view. It’s also worth searching on social media - wedding togs often hashtag venue names with their shared work…
5. Ask About Photography Rules and Restrictions
It might not be the first thing on your mind, but some venues have rules about where photographers can shoot — especially during ceremonies.
Be sure to ask:
Are there any limitations on photography during the ceremony?
Is drone photography allowed? (This isn’t something I offer currently, but you might end up with a wedding photographer who does!)
Are there any standout locations or hidden gems around the property for portraits?
Having a clear idea of what’s allowed ensures we can capture your day as naturally and beautifully as possible.
6. Be Clear on Budget and Packages
Venues can vary wildly in price, and it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement. Make sure you’re comparing like-for-like — some offer all-inclusive packages, while others are more DIY. It might sound daft, but ask if there’s an extra charge for things like tables, chairs etc. there often is!
Local tip: Many Wiltshire venues offer midweek or off-season discounts, which can be a great way to get your dream venue at a more affordable price.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, the perfect wedding venue is one that feels right for you. It should reflect your story, suit your style, and be a place where you can picture yourselves surrounded by your favourite people, celebrating something truly special.
Happy planning!
