How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Venue: Tips from a Wiltshire Wedding Photographer

Choosing your wedding venue is one of the biggest — and most exciting — decisions you’ll make when planning your big day. It sets the tone, shapes the atmosphere, and becomes the backdrop for every moment (and every photo!).

As a wedding photographer based in Salisbury, Wiltshire, I’ve been lucky enough to capture weddings at a wide variety of venues — from rustic barns tucked away in the countryside to grand hotels with sweeping views. Over the years, I’ve learned what really matters when choosing the perfect place to say “I do.” Whether you’re just starting your venue search or narrowing down your list, here are some tips to help you find the ideal spot.

Before diving into brochures and venue tours, take a moment to imagine your wedding day. Are you picturing a relaxed outdoor celebration with fairy lights and long trestle tables? Or something more classic — perhaps a stately home with elegant gardens and a candlelit reception?

Your venue should reflect your personality as a couple. Think about:

• The overall vibe — rustic, romantic, modern, vintage?

• Your guest list size — do you want something intimate or grand?

• The kind of photos you’re dreaming of — a venue’s setting plays a huge role in the look and feel of your wedding gallery.

2. Consider the Season and the Weather

Wiltshire is home to some stunning venues — rolling countryside, historic buildings, and picturesque gardens — but it’s also the UK, so the weather can be unpredictable (it poured down on my wedding day).

• What are the indoor options if it rains?

• Is the venue easy to get to from Salisbury, Bath, Warminster or nearby towns with rail and bus connections?

• Are there dedicated spaces for getting ready?

Venues that have a good flow between ceremony, reception, and evening party areas also tend to photograph better and help keep the day stress-free.

Try to visit your shortlisted venues at the same time of year — and ideally the same time of day — as your planned wedding date. This gives you a much clearer picture of how the light will look, how the gardens will feel, and what your guests might experience.

Local tip: Many Wiltshire venues offer midweek or off-season discounts, which can be a great way to get your dream venue at a more affordable price.
